Since 1993, World Water Day has been celebrated annually on 22 March. The day is the result of the 1992 UN Conference on Environment and Development in Rio de Janeiro, where it was proclaimed by resolution of the UN General Assembly.

Despite its high value as a natural and cultural resource, water is rarely the focus of public interest. World Water Day aims to draw public attention to the issue of water.
